Is ApneScan really 100% free?
Yes. Every feature — OCR, batch scanning, PDF tools, auto-rename, search — is free, with no trial period, ads, or locked "pro" tier. Commercial use in hospitals, offices and businesses is allowed.
Which Windows versions are supported?
Windows 10 and Windows 11. The app is built 32-bit, so it also runs on older 32-bit machines still common in offices.
Will it work with my scanner?
Almost certainly. ApneScan speaks TWAIN, WIA and network eSCL — covering Canon, HP, Brother, Epson, Ricoh, Kodak, Fujitsu, Xerox, Plustek, Panasonic and more, over USB or network, including ADF sheet-feeders.
My scanner has no Windows 11 driver. Can ApneScan still use it?
Often yes — network scanners are used via driver-less eSCL, so many "unsupported" office scanners work out of the box. Just connect it to your network and let ApneScan find it.
Does OCR support Hindi?
Yes — Hindi, English and mixed documents. OCR powers searchable PDFs, auto-naming and text extraction to Word/Excel. The OCR engine (Tesseract) now ships inside the installer, so it works out of the box — nothing extra to install.
Do the AI features need internet?
No. Every AI feature — auto enhance, colour restore, smart crop, stain/finger removal, signature extraction, quality guard, duplicate detection, auto-naming — runs 100% offline on your PC. No cloud, no limits, no cost.
Can it remove a stain or a finger from a scan?
Yes — open the page in the editor, pick the 🩹 Heal tool and drag a box over the stain, staple mark or finger. The AI fills the area from its surroundings, keeping lines that pass through intact.
Can I reuse my signature or office stamp?
Yes — the editor can lift a signature/stamp off any scanned page with a transparent background, save it, and place it on any document with one click.
What is a searchable PDF?
A normal-looking PDF with an invisible text layer underneath the scan. You can press Ctrl+F in any PDF reader and find a name or claim number inside the scanned image.
How does auto-rename work?
ApneScan reads the document with OCR, recognises what it is (prescription, bill, Aadhaar, report…) and who it belongs to, then suggests a clean name like "Rajendra_Kumar-Prescription". It learns your corrections over time.
Can it scan both sides of a page automatically?
Yes — duplex ADF scanning is fully supported, and blank back sides are removed automatically.
How fast is the search?
Instant — an in-memory index answers as you type, even across 50,000+ files. Partial numbers ("3166" finds 3166901_Garima_Shek), partial names, and even typos ("Rajedra" finds Rajendra) all work.
Can I compress PDFs for government portals?
Yes — choose a target like 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB and ApneScan compresses the PDF to fit under it.
Does it work offline?
Completely. Scanning, OCR, naming, search — everything runs on your PC. No cloud, no account, no data leaves your machine.

Does it import photos from my phone?

How do updates work?
ApneScan installs per-user, so new versions update themselves silently in the background — no administrator prompt and no reinstalling. You always have the latest features automatically.
Can I share files phone-to-phone without the app?
Yes. Open Web Share in any browser, create a room, and share the QR or 6-character code. A second phone (or a computer) joins and both sides can send and receive any file — photos, PDFs, video, Office files, zip, anything. Rooms auto-expire and files are deleted automatically. Nothing is installed.
Is there a portable version?
Yes — download the Portable ZIP, extract it to a folder or USB stick, and run ApneScan.exe from inside — no installation required.
